Read These Books Before They Become Movie Adaptations in 2020

It's an age-old argument and a great ice-breaker question for any first date: Book or movie? This is the question that can inform what a person really appreciates about a story. Do they like the pure elements that were developed from an author's mind or the repurposed plot that's been reimagined by a screenwriter with his or her own ideas of what the story should be? This argument might never end when it comes to The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter franchises, especially because it's now impossible to imagine the boy wizard as anyone other than Daniel Radcliffe. It's the most wonderful time of the year. Sure, sure—that's because the holiday season is still in full swing, giving us until January 1 to keep believing in goodwill towards men and general yuletide friendliness. How to Make a Gold Rush

The Gold Rush is an easy one to make and to drink. Its spirit base is bourbon, its zest comes from lemon, and its sweetness is honey. Think of it like a Whiskey Sour with a different sweetener (and no egg white), or a Hot Toddy served cold. And who could complain about bourbon, lemon, and honey? No one, that's who! You're basically making boozy tea! Some Gold Rush recipes call for honey syrup instead of straight honey, but if you shake hard enough, the straight honey will do just fine. Choose your bourbon wisely, too, as its flavor will significantly characterize the cocktail. Go higher proof for more heat, or a solid blend that you love. Read More

Netflix's Don't F**k With Cats Wouldn't Have Existed Without These Two Internet Sleuths

Netflix's breakout docuseries, Don't Fuck with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer, has captured the nation's attention because, as the title suggests, people do not like when someone messes with the internet's mascot. In fact, according to the doc, it's the internet's "rule zero." The three-part limited series goes well beyond the terrors of animal abuse though. The full story of Luka Magnotta and the heinous Canadian murder he was charged for might have never have come to light had it not been for John Green and Deanna Thompson. Green, a Los Angeles resident with a penchant for internet sleuthing, and Thompson, a Las Vegas casino data analyst, worked together over the course of two years to unearth Magnotta's identity after a video of a man killing two kittens in a vacuum-sealed bag went viral. What the two didn't know is how extensive, and potentially dangerous, their search would be. Read More

Chewbacca Should Have Died in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

I've had a lot of time to think on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker since seeing it in late December. I've been following the coverage—the good and the bad—and I maintain that it wasn't a great movie. It was fine. It wasn't worse than the prequels, but it was desperately trying to please everyone. This last chapter of the Skywalker saga made a conscious effort to negate or re-write bold storytelling leaps that Rian Johnson made in its predecessor, The Last Jedi. In many ways, that makes it one of the most disappointing and frustrating Star Wars films of all time. Read More
