50+ Black-Owned Fashion Brands and Stores to Support Now and Always

It's on all of us as consumers to help push for substantive change. In other words, it's time to put your money where your mouth is. Direct donations are clearly the most effective way to support those who are marching around the world to demand change right now, but ongoing support of black-owned business is an important addition to that—especially in the long term. This list, which will be updated regularly, is not exhaustive. This Is the Most Singularly Batsh*t Crazy Thing Any President Has Said Out Loud in Public

The president* held a press event Friday morning to tout the fact that unemployment is not as far over 13 percent as people thought it might be. But when asked about George Floyd, Trump once again dove straight into idiocy. Nixon talked crazy, but only in private. Officers were trying to clear the city's Niagara Square as part of an attempt to enforce a curfew. Video emerged of an elderly man approaching a line of heavily riot-geared police and confronting them. While this might be ill-advised in the current circumstances, is it actually illegal, in any legitimate sense, just because the mayor instituted a curfew? Meanwhile, police officers are not Knights of the Realm in whose path mere commoners dare not tread. This man did not pose a threat to anyone. Yet look what happens. Read More

Pride Has Always Been a Protest Against An Unjust System

Pride has never looked like this before. Parades are scuttled. Gatherings are a public health concern. But that hardly means that Pride is canceled; scores of people have taken to the street in protest for Black Lives Matter. For those who can't, celebrating Pride in quarantine is a protest itself. This month, Esquire is examining what Pride means now, beyond the parade and for the next 50 years—whether it's advocating for justice over Zoom, discovering the intersectionality too often missing from Pride, or simply existing as a trans father. The protest continues. First up, rather than focus on the change, Tre'vell Anderson writes about how this pride in this moment, isn't different after all. Read More
