SHOP EXCLUSIVE SUBSCRIBE Let us ask you something: how many paintings by Leonardo da Vinci exist in the world? A dozen? Fifty? Maybe a hundred? Whenever Esquire's Daniel Dumas poses this query to people, the guess he receives in reply is usually one of two extreme, and opposing, options: something impossibly low like, "There's what, three?" or something insanely high like, "I don't know...500?" The answer is actually closer to the impossibly low end of the spectrum. There are eight works that we know unequivocally that the master painted and then another nine or so that experts are pretty sure he created but the provenance—records that trace the painting's whereabouts from easel to present day—is disputed, lost, or incomplete. A single painting by Leonardo is one of the rarest, not to mention most valuable, items on earth. Now, the unlikely journey of one of Da Vinci's works is now the subject of Dutch director Andreas Koefoed's fascinating new documentary The Lost Leonardo, out now.

"You may think you have all the shorts you need to ride out the rest of summer," writes Esquire's Ben Boskovich. "I did. But sadly, dear reader, I've discovered that we're both wrong. You see, I found myself well-equipped heading into the summer of 2021. I have mesh shorts I love and wear multiple times a week. I have Hard Shorts I can wear to the function now that I'm vaccinated. I even have swim trunks I don't mind keeping on for the function that follows a summer swim. But then I happened across Bonobos' Rec Shorts, which could easily replace the whole lot, should I be struck in the heart by the minimalism gods at some point. (I will never downsize, you guys.) I digress. These shorts were the best decision I made all summer—and I got engaged this summer. Here's why."
In the late seventies, Peter Sutcliffe—AKA the Yorkshire Ripper—went on a killing spree that left 13 women dead and police baffled. When 'Esquire' joined the case in 1980, authorities had been searching for him for five years. Even villains had a price on his head.
