Tom DeLonge has a lot to say. About life, about music, and—because he is, to my knowledge, the only rock star to have co-founded a company devoted to the scientific research of unexplained aerial phenomena—about UFOs. "When you study UFOs, you're looking at consciousness," he tells me over Zoom from the patio of an Encinitas bar on a gloomy late-summer morning. He is not drinking. "You're looking at the history of mankind, like archeology, or archeological evidence, or ancient texts, religious texts. You're looking at national security. You're looking at physics, unified field theory. You're looking at kind of the forefront of quantum mechanics and how the universe seems to be built. And what you start to realize is that the evidence of those phenomena is not at all what people think it is." We have arrived here about five minutes into our conversation, before I've even had the opportunity to ask probing questions like What can you tell me about the new Angels & Airwaves album?, or How are you? "Hey, I dive right in," he says, laughing. "I don't have time for the appetizer. I'm like: let's get dessert." Fall is upon us, meaning that as children are driven back to the stacks, so too are adults returning to their reading lists. If you fell away from your goals over the summer, have no fear: fall is the best time of year to buckle down with a thrilling page-turner. Whether you're looking to read more, read outdoors, or cross a big literary project off your list, the final push toward the finish line begins now—and we've got you covered with the very best books of the year. Here to put a smile on our faces—and maybe yours, too—is J.Crew and its stellar sale. Not only are some choice fits slashed up to 50 percent, but the retailer is taking an additional 30 percent off sale items. You don't have to be a math wiz to understand that this is a steal. I mean, a slim-fit chore blazer for $84 and striped button-down for $25? That's basically highway robbery. And there are 350 more picks—from boxers and socks to sweaters and sneakers—that also come with the same bargain. Indeed, there's a lot of stuff, which is why we narrowed the best options (and did the math), all which will help us get back in the swing of things. We all know the problem—it might be hot, cold, rainy, sunny, muggy, and balmy all in the same day—but it's still remarkably difficult to tune in a single fit that can deal with it. We're not saying we've found the magic bullet, but we can tell you that one of the best ways to begin to conquer this seemingly unconquerable problem is to have a lightweight cardigan on hand at pretty much all times. And, hey, guess what: Alex Mill just dropped a trio of merino cardigans that fill the bill perfectly. At this point, your scroll through, across, up, and down Netflix is an evening staple after a long day. Here at Esquire, we usually know what's coming out on the platform each week because this is our job, and still most nights witness us perusing through the best TV for longer than we'd like to admit. So we've compiled a list of the best bets on the platform from this calendar year—an abbreviated rundown that'll keep you from getting arthritis in your remote-thumb. (It's a thing.) "I'm not sure exactly when it happened," writes Esquire's Robert Scheffler, "but a while back I started skipping a few songs on my go-to playlist—intentionally and consistently. I still loved them, but I found I loved them so much I couldn't play them anymore. They were songs I savored differently. The thought of listening to them was like accepting an invitation to a family wedding that involved travel; I knew there'd be some work involved and a whole rabble of cousins to deal with. I couldn't play these songs casually; they had become too personal. They required space and submission to what they demanded of me, and what they demanded was communion. I realized I was saving them for when I needed them. I realized they were Sacred Songs.
