Have you watched Task yet? It might be the show of the year. I just finished it, and I'm in search of something new. Good thing we just updated our list of the best TV shows of 2025 (which, yes, includes Task). If you're looking for a viewing recommendation, or you just want to mix it up in the comments, I suggest you check it out below. – Michael Sebastian, editor-in-chief Plus: |

The show-of-the-year debate is officially at a fever pitch. |
Longtime readers of Esquire's ongoing best-of-the-year TV list will know that December is a cruel month. It's when we narrow down our favorites of the year (you'll notice that we have a hefty twenty-eight entries in the current batch) into a ranked top-ten list. It's always an impossible fight between our entertainment editors when we have to figure out whether or not a season like Curb Your Enthusiasm's final bow will live in Esquire small-screen history. Now, I don't want to spoil my final column in December, but I just looked at our top ten from 2024—and I can safely say I would have no problem placing at least five shows from 2025 comfortably above every series but Shōgun. In a little over a month, we'll have to somehow deliver the final word on The Pitt, Paradise, The Studio, The Last of Us, The White Lotus, Severance, Alien: Earth, Task, and Andor. On most days, I love my job. When the time comes to rank 2025's slate into a neat and tidy top ten, I will not. Until then, here are the best TV shows of the year so far |

| The story of how Union Square Cafe, the famous restaurant in New York, became as important to my family as it is to the national restaurant industry begins, in a way, before I was born. Even though my brother, sisters, and I were raised in what we considered a boring suburb of Hartford in the 1980s, my mother always subscribed to New York magazine. New York (the city) was a good two hours away without traffic, but a new issue showed up every week in the brass mailbox in front of our tidy house on a quiet street. I think the magazine reminded her that the greatest city in the world wasn't too far away and perhaps afforded her an escape from packing lunches, driving to soccer practices, and chairing PTA meetings as she read about Broadway shows, new restaurants, and Upper East Side scandals. My mother always scanned the listings in New York, and on those trips into "the city" my parents exposed us to the kind of food you just couldn't eat in Hartford. |

The last thing you need on a long flight is a pair of headphones that can't handle the pressure. Ditto that for a puffer vest on a frigid day, chukka boots on a big night out, and an umbrella when the rain is coming down in sheets. Life is tough enough without having to deal with subpar necessities. Which is why we always say that if you can afford it, it pays to invest in the stuff you use on the regular. Nothing on the list here is cheap. But it's all worth it—which is why we heartily endorse every single entry. Could you opt for something less expensive and less worthy of a spot in your closet? Sure. But don't say we didn't warn you. Whether you're going about your daily routine or hitting the road, these picks won't do you wrong. | |
