How to Choose a Gift for a Kid |
To understand why I gave Anwyn a scorpion, you have to know about the scroundrels. The scroundrels are a group of strange little creatures that have been a part of her life pretty much forever. They look sort of like unwatered Gremlins and were born in our imagination during a long road trip years ago. Now, whenever we're driving somewhere together, before I've even put the car into gear, Anwyn gives me a two-word imperative from the backseat: "Scroundrel story!" Sometimes I forget where our story left off. She never does. Over time, the two of us have worked out a pretty detailed portrait of the scroundrels. Their likes, their dislikes, their vices, and their virtues. As far as food goes, the scroundrels love to eat scorpions. They sprinkle dried scorpions on their cereal, mash scorpions into their fruit smoothies, fry scorpions up for dinner. Most of all, they love candy-coated scorpions.

What It's Like to Take a Psychedelic Trip Without Drugs |
It doesn't take a third eye to see that, at long last, Americans seem primed to turn on. If you've heard yourself utter the phrase "plant medicine" when what you mean is "shrooms," if you've found yourself absently Googling "ayahuasca retreats" the way you used to look for beach getaways, if you've got a friend who flew across the country to take a "heroic dose" of psilocybin in the care of a shaman and you felt the sharp prick of jealousy…you are, well, hardly alone. We're talking senior citizens ("…psychedelics are wasted on the young," author and mushroom mainstreamer Michael Pollan told AARP) and moms ("Magic Mushrooms Helped Me Cope With Postpartum Depression," writes Good Housekeeping). We're talking business executives looking for creative inspiration, and guys who wouldn't be caught dead in a tie-dye searching for a little magic in their lives, be it a psychological breakthrough, a mystical experience, or just a mind-blowingly bananas weekend. I'm one of those looking for a little magic. |

Our Favorite Puffer of the Year |
Puffer jacket season used to be my most dreaded time of year. I committed a lot of time to searching for coat formulas and variations that could replace a puffer in the dead of winter—everything from layers and layers of sweaters and light jackets to hoodies and long trenches proved futile, unable to match up to the easy warmth, waterproofness, and versatility of a puffer. People have touted many jackets to me, including the Lululemon Wunder Puff Jacket, but I was always reluctant to believe them. Big mistake on my part. This year, I finally caved and tried the Wunder Puff for myself, and let me tell you: This puffer is phenomenal. |

Julian Lennon on John, Paul, "Hey Jude," Yoko...and Love |
It was "Hey Jules" at first, but that didn't quite sit well rhythmically, Julian Lennon tells Esquire. "'Hey Jude' was a better interpretation." "Paul wrote it to console Mum, and also to console me. It's a beautiful sentiment, no question about that, and I'm very thankful—but I've also been driven up the wall by it. I love the fact that he wrote a song about me and for Mum, but depending on what side of the bed one woke up on, and where you're hearing it, it can be a good or a slightly frustrating thing. But in my heart of hearts, there's not a bad word I could say about it." |

The Land Beyond the Drug War |
Down a side street parallel to Eighty-second Avenue in Southeast Portland, a gangly young white guy in a T-shirt and jeans stood on the sidewalk with one foot on the pedal of a galaxy-purple bike. His name was Brandon, and there were two red marks on his face that he said were from a fall. He'd bought the bike from a junkie for five dollars. "People are fiends out here," he said. Then, with some half regret: "That's terrible." Fentanyl changed everything, Brandon told us. "I remember in the beginning, when it first started, it was super strong—up and down," he said. "People were dyin' like a motherfucker." Fentanyl powder is cropping up more and more, and Brandon mentioned his brother was injecting it for a stint. He thought that was crazy. |
