On the whole, it was a great year for established auteurs leaning into their strengths: David Fincher made a taut thriller, Sofia Coppola crafted a lush drama about "privilege without power," Martin Scorsese reunited with his two favorite actors for a three-hour epic about crime and betrayal, and so on and so forth. But there were plenty of thrilling debuts, too. I am officially in the bag for A.V. Rockwell, Alice Diop, and Ellie Foumbi. I was also taken with what a rising crop of indie filmmakers did with miniscule budgets, and encouraged to see several established phenoms use their blank checks for wild, audacious swings. |

Ramy Youssef has spent the last several months of 2023 on a global stand-up tour, which is ending its U. S. leg just as he hits the big screen in one of the buzziest films of the year, Yorgos Lanthimos's Poor Things. It's a movie, and a performance, that will change the way people talk about him. In between stand-up dates, Esquire photographed the 32-year-old in New York, wearing this winter's smartest overcoats. Then we asked his close friend and collaborator, The Bear creator Christopher Storer, to have a series of conversations with him and send us the recordings. "Getting to do a lot of what we're doing together has been really cool," Youssef says. "I'd been directing small stuff, but in terms of narrative, it felt like we were learning it together." |

Before we start, let me say: I don't think gifts should be practical. In fact, I think the best gifts for your man, wife, husband, dad, or whoever are decidedly impractical. The holidays are when you go big, and it's when you spoil your loved ones with things they want but would never splurge on for themselves. That said, there's a line you can tread when buying practical gifts. You can be incredibly generous while gifting them something they are going to use everyday. If you pay attention throughout the year, you'll already know what they need. |
