But based on Gladiator II, the rousing and long-awaited follow-up to Ridley Scott's 2000 Best Picture winner, he's not there yet. As the husband, farmer, and soldier turned gladiator Lucius Veras, Mescal is heroic and ripped and undeniably compelling. But he's unable to muster the same brute-force charisma and agonizing inner demons that made Russell Crowe so hypnotic and haunting as Maximus. |
