Sci-fi brings out the best in our imaginations and evokes a sense of wonder, but it also inspires a spirit of questioning. Through the enduring themes of sci-fi, we can examine the zeitgeist's cultural context and ethical questions. Our favorite works in the genre make good on this promise, meditating on everything from identity to oppression to morality. As the Nobel Prize-winning novelist Doris Lessing said, "Science fiction is some of the best social fiction of our time." Now, in ranked order, here are the best science fiction books of all time. |

She's ready to tap in at any moment, but she cannot indicate to anybody that she is ready to tap in at any moment. She's the Vice President, closer to assuming the presidency than perhaps any woman in American history, but also an erstwhile rising star who has had her wings clipped by the same office that anointed her. Everybody wants to know what Kamala Harris thinks about Joe Biden, candidate, but Harris must evade even the appearance of thinking about Joe Biden, candidate. She's a socially awkward aunt to some, a crooked climber to others. She's a cop, she's a left wing radical. She's unelectable, she's the only way that democrats can defeat Trump in November. She's the president's closest ally, she's, uh… Donald Trump. In these days of the embattled Joe Biden presidency, the Vice President is everything, everywhere, all at once, and yet nowhere. |

One of my summertime go-tos has always been a rum and coke with lime, aka the Cuba Libre. Gently boozy rum sweetness, tart lime juice, a touch of bitter citrus peel, effervescent Coca Cola. It's more work than popping open a cold beer (or a canned cocktail) but it satisfies in much the same way. Plus that little kick of caffeine is often what's needed to keep it together on a sweltering, nap-inducing day. Recently, a similar drink has worked its way into my summer rotation: the Batanga. Think of it as Mexico's tequila-fueled answer to the Cuba Libre. It turns out the earthy and vegetal sweetness of tequila is as lovely a companion to Coke as rum. |
