So this rally in Florida on Tuesday night. "Did anyone ever see the lovely movie 'The Silence of the Lambs'? Did you ever see it? Did you ever hear of Hannibal Lecter? He was a lovely...He would love to have you for dinner. He will take you. He had many people for dinner....We have a lot of people coming in. 'Oh, that's terrible what Trump would say. He is rambling about Hannibal Lecter.' No, I'm not rambling. We are allowing people from insane asylums and mental institutions into our country by the tens of thousands."

In the beginning, it was just for boys. Originating in the late nineteenth century as a popular, morally instructive piece of entertainment for preteen males, the sports novel has had a long, slow climb to respectability. Ever since it began to encroach on more elevated terrain in the middle of the twentieth century, the genre has maintained an uneasy relationship with the higher claims of literature. With its cast of larger-than-life characters, its central place in the lives of so many fans, and its mirroring of the world beyond the field, the sports universe is a rich site of inquiry for the receptive novelist. Yet the novel of athletics has only sporadically taken advantage of these possibilities. Now a wide range of writers have picked up the thread again, employing a dizzying array of stylistic and thematic approaches that have gone a long way toward refreshing the genre. |

What celebrities come to mind when you think of bucket hats? Liam Gallagher, or LL Cool J, for sure. But Brad Pitt? If he doesn't, he very well should. Over the weekend, the 60-year-old made two appearances at Silverstone, where he was filming scenes for his upcoming racing blockbuster, F1, as well as watching the drizzly British Grand Prix. On Friday, he paired a quilted Burberry jacket with a Burberry bucket hat in a Daniel Lee-designed variant of its famed Nova check. Then on Sunday, the actor rocked up to the paddock in a same-but-different ensemble: a cord jacket, white tee, butter-yellow trousers, and a houndstooth hat. Different day, slightly different headwear! |
