For my entire childhood, Christmas was solely a holiday about the movies. Whether it was watching a Christmas Day blockbuster in theaters (A Complete Unknown, anyone?), or simply enjoying the annual How the Grinch Stole Christmas on cable, I had to gather the family together for a film—or else I'd turn into a real Scrooge. Thankfully, they obliged. As the great Macaulay Culkin said in Home Alone 2, "You can mess with a lot of things. But you can't mess with kids on Christmas." From classics like Miracle on 34th Street to modern day comedies like Elf—and an action film that just so happens to take place on Christmas!—this list has everything you could ask for this holiday season. |

Traditionally, wearing sneakers meant one of two things: You were either working out or chilling out. They didn't speak to your identity, or say much about your sense of style or standing in society. But now, in an age of casualization and comfort, your choice of sneakers and how you wear them speaks volumes. Thankfully, there are more options than ever, but that doesn't necessarily make choosing any easier. |

On my Instagram feed, an account from Ireland has put up videos of street scenes of Dublin at Christmastime. A crowd gathers outside Grogan's Castle Lounge on South William Street, the greatest of all pubs in the world, and everybody sings "Fairytale of New York." We lost Shane McGowan a year ago, but he left to all children and grandchildren of the diaspora a holiday anthem. There are people two-stepping and step-dancing all up and down Grafton Street, and those who aren't dancing are cheering on those who are. I like to think that Fred Scrooge is leaning against the bar in Grogan's, standing his round, and enjoying the merriment of all of his "fellow travelers to the grave." A bit dramatic there, old man, but, still, there is music. And dancing. |
