If you (and your feet!) are feeling ready to ease back into the swing of things there's no better time to invest in a trusty pair of boots than right now. Worried you forgot how to shop for anything that isn't expressly billed as a "WFH staple you totally need to try?" I got you, dog. If You're Buying One Thing for Fall 2020, Make It a Chore Coat

It's probably time you copped a chore coat, about as perfect a fall jacket as they come. We've been diehard proponents of the style for a minute now but there's no time like the present to invest in a silhouette that'll yield major dividends this fall—and as a crucial layering piece throughout the colder months down the line. The chore coat sees you debating the plausibility of crafting the perfect fall jacket and says "hold my beer." This is its season, and it's about to put on a hell of a show. Chace Crawford Just Wants to Flex His Muscles. No, Not Those, the Acting Ones.

These days, Chace Crawford knows more than most about being a hero. He stars on Amazon's The Boys, a superhero satire that toggles between darkly comic ultraviolence and trenchant criticism of celebrity culture. And the series, which returned for a second season Friday, often relies on Crawford to land these tonal jumps as it navigates stories examining sexual assault, corporate power, and the grim undertones of our cultural fascination with all things superhero. Whether he's sharing a scene with a lobster tank or a sensitive moment with a fellow actor, the 35-year-old Texas native projects humor, pathos, and frighteningly casual menace with biting verisimilitude. Esquire's Gabrielle Bruney spoke with Crawford about his career, The Boys, and breaking out of the heartthrob mold the industry seems so set on keeping him in. Read More

Apparently Game of Thrones Was Supposed to End a Lot Differently

After years of being one of Westeros' under-sung heroes—a real get-shit-done kind of guy who was able to return from the dead, defeat Ramsay Bolton's army, and lead an expedition to capture a zombie—Jon Snow spent most of Game of Thrones' Season Eight being pretty impressively useless. During the Battle of Winterfell, humanity's big showdown against the army of the dead, he spent most of the night just flying around on his girlfriend's dragon. In the end, his little sister, Arya, was the person who slew the Night King and saved the world. But according to Arya actor Maisie Williams, the showdown that seemed to be years in the making was actually originally planned for the series' end. Read More

We're Not Going to Fall for This Again, Are We?

Here we have Charles P. Pierce on The Further Adventures of the President*'s Branded Swamp. We're not going to fall for this again, are we? Bloomberg is reporting that Trump "hasn't yet committed to any self-funding, according to people briefed on internal deliberations. Though Trump personally contributed $66 million to his 2016 campaign, it would be unprecedented for an incumbent president to put his own money toward winning a second term." First of all, he may not have $100 million to invest in his campaign, and there isn't a bank in the Western Hemisphere who will loan him the price of a hot dog. (And the 2016 self-funding tale is, at best, incomplete in its details.) More from Pierce here. Read More

The Best History Podcasts to Binge Right Now

There's nothing quite like learning about the history of humanity from the most human form of communication there is. Not only is humanity filled with natural-born storytellers, but there is also a whole lot of history to be told that our texts have completely missed or, rather, "missed." Luckily, we now live in an age where we can encounter storytelling that rivals the likes of Homer's epics, but on our morning commute. Even better, they can be paused and resumed as we please. These podcasts not only revisit history in entertaining and innovative ways, they restructure our perception of history as we've known it. So, pop in your earbuds, or dial up your home speaker system to give your neighbors a free crash course. (We don't recommend the latter.) It's time to let some podcasters repeat history to us so that it doesn't repeat itself. Read More
