It is better to say less than more, especially if you have children. You still have to see this person over and over again. At the lawyer's. At the notary's. At school. At games. You don't want her dead, exactly. But if she spontaneously combusted, and it didn't hurt your child's feelings, and you never had to look at her or talk to her again, you probably wouldn't mind. Meanwhile, you have to be cordial.
Because it's still cold out there, and you still need some protection from the elements. For putting on the tuxes and shaving the scruff and donning the cufflinks—and everything else this sacred bond entails. Sunday night's Super Bowl unfolded like I imagine a night on molly in the Metaverse might; a fun, high-flying first half gave way to a perfect halftime performance which ushered in a second half that was fun until two dozen dudes started hawking crypto. The comedown officially set in during the 4th quarter's umpteenth crypto commercial, in between the final drive's 6th and 7th penalties. By that point, I was long past ready for Doja Cat and Courtney Love to feed me a Crunchwrap Supreme and put me to bed with the sound of Hole's "Celebrity Skin" still ringing through my Beats by Dre earbuds. As far as hallucinations go, this Super Bowl had everything: Billie Jean King lording over a coin toss, Martha Stewart on wine, Snoop Dogg crimping, injuries, penalties, GOATs, goats, Miley Cyrus, young Lebron, big Lebron, CGI Lebron, and Guy Fieri.
It's the mattress you'll spend the rest of your life sleeping on. When you put Eminem, Mary J Blige, Dr. Dre, Snoop, and Kendrick on the same stage? Have mercy. Congratulations, dear reader: we've made it to another year in books. Whether you read like the wind in 2021 or fell short of your goals, 2022 marks a new year, a new you, and a whole new slate of releases to devour. Whether you're looking to understand our current moment through rigorous nonfiction or escape it through otherworldly plots, 2022's first crop of new titles offer something for readers of every persuasion. Our favorite books of the season run the gamut of genres, from epic fantasy to literary fiction, and tackle a constellation of subjects. If you want to read about spaceships, talking pigs, or supervillains, you've come to the right place.
