Donald Trump Doesn't Have the Will—or the Intelligence—to Control What He's Let Loose

A Trump voter showed up armed to a migrant center in El Paso.

Donald Trump Doesn't Have the Will—or the Intelligence—to Control What He's Let Loose

DES MOINES, IA—It really is time for many of my fellow citizens to go into the concussion protocol—or, at the very least, to take the next couple of plays off. The country is undergoing a nervous breakdown, and one that it is coping with by arming itself heavily. I've lived through these kinds of manic episodes in our politics before, but never have I lived through one of them in which the president* himself is Patient Zero. El Caudillo del Mar-a-Lago has unleashed every predatory impulse in the national Id, and he doesn't have either the will or the intelligence to control what he's loosed. Read More

This Week's Biggest Sneaker Releases, and Where to Get Them

It's a huge week for retro runners, so if those are your thing, you've got more than enough to choose from. Nike's bringing back the Air Ghost Racer, plus a couple of tweaked colorways of the Air Max 1. And Adidas is serving up a couple OGs in the form of the ZX 5000 and a (renamed) Lexicon. But if those aren't your speed, there's also a full-blown tribute to SpongeBob SquarePants from Nike and Kyrie Irving, plus two Air Jordans that have roots in soccer and skating instead of basketball. That's not even the whole story, though. Check out the full list to see what's on deck. Read More

Quentin Tarantino Details His 'Epilogue-y' 10th and Final Film

Quentin Tarantino has long maintained that he will only make 10 movies, which leaves him with one more after this summer's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (excluding the often over-looked Death Proof). While he maintains that he wants to make a Star Trek movie, and maybe a third Kill Bill film, it's unclear what this 10th and final Tarantino feature will be about. Read More

Faced With Gun Violence in Its Stores, Walmart Turns to Fantastical Thinking

America is the land of magical thinking, where your wildest dreams come true and everyone's a pre-millionaire. It has its downsides, though. Our collective reaction to crisis is not just panic but delusion, where we spin fairytales to protect our innocence even when the answers are right in front of us. The man who committed a massacre at an El Paso Walmart, for instance, was very clear about why he did it in a revolting screed he published online. He believed there was an "invasion" of brown people storming into this country—a talking point you can find any night of the week on Fox News or the presidential Twitter feed—and decided to murder people to try to stop it. He reportedly told police he set out to kill as many Mexicans as he could. Read More

Thank You, Justin Bieber, for Still Keepin' It Sleazy

Ah, here's our boy. Justin Bieber, the OG sleazy boy. The one who, in the midst of a world roiled by change, stands alone. Who holds firm to his principles (of sleaziness), even now. Because though it's hard to believe, it's been a whole damn year since Bieber and his band of haphazardly dressed brothers kicked off the Summer of Sleaze. And yet, here he is, coffee cup in hand, keeping the spirit alive. Read More

Taylor Swift Thinks a Hillary Clinton Endorsement Would Have Been Useless. That's a Sad Excuse.

There was a period of time during the 2016 presidential election where people were honestly speculating that Taylor Swift might be voting for Donald Trump. White supremacists had formed a weird fandom for the star, theorizing in message boards that she was simply waiting for Trump to ascend to the presidency before making her true feelings known ("How Taylor Swift Became a Nazi Idol" is an actual article from a real outlet that ran that year).
