The spirit of reflection and resolution is a popular theme when it comes to a lot of Hollywood classics. So it's no surprise that a holiday marked by such sentiments has been featured across so many films. Perhaps your resolution this New Year's resembles the hero's journey: a call to action and commitment to change against all odds. Maybe you're more of the rom-com type, just focused on securing that midnight kiss with the one that got away. Either way, if you're already imagining the trailer of the coming year, or reminiscing on the highlight reel of years past, there's a perfect New Year's movie out there for you.
Sommelier Amy Racine calls it "the Red Bull of wine." Sold. There's no need to compromise on style, sound, or comfort with the audio tech this year has to offer. The movies have always been very clear about what you're supposed to do on New Year's Eve: You're sitting alone at home or at some boring party before realizing, with a white-hot epiphany, whom you love and therefore whom you're supposed to be with when the clock strikes midnight. You're then supposed to begin running in their direction through whatever city you happen to be in (although New York City is preferable). You arrive and give a big "I love you" speech in the middle of a group of people who don't even seem to notice that you're giving that speech. The filmmakers who don't care about being cliched love this device even though 'When Harry Met Sally' (1989) did it so perfectly that everyone else who attempts it will forever be an imitator.
Warby Parker's affordable Harris takes the beloved wayfarer shape and gives it the DTC treatment. Serve up a champagne-and-something to toast all the victories, big or small. Standing on a verdant sea cliff in the Scottish Highlands, the briny breeze in our hair, warmed by a blanket of local single malt whisky—that's where we were supposed to be. It was March 2020 and, like all travel, our trip to the UK was canceled. My husband and I found ourselves instead sheltering in place with a toddler, venturing no further than the refrigerator to crack another stress beer. If you've never been in quarantine with a toddler, it's best compared to the movie 'Snakes on a Plane': They're everywhere, they bite, and there's no escape. So when two small bottles of amber liquid appeared on our porch with a note, "Zoom scotch tasting," we welcomed the distraction.
