From Jonah Hill to Jay-Z, famous guys are baring their chests in tailored clothing. We investigate the phenomenon.
On December 2, Jonah Hill stepped onto the red carpet dressed in a fit that challenged us to hate it. We simply couldn't. A strange start to the month, indeed. The look was by Gucci, the Italian label beloved by magpies and fervent fans of The Royal Tenenbaums, and the seafoam color was just the beginning: three pronounced brooches, a shimmering cyan necklace, and aquamarine jacquard mules by Manolo Blahnik finished it off. Hill also matched almost completely with his girlfriend, surfing instructor Sarah Brady. As if all that doesn't sound peculiar already, intentionally missing was a shirt. Chalk it up to the warm-ish December night or Hill's knack for dressing outside the proverbial box, his shirtless suit was on the money either way. So much so that the fit went viral, overtaking my Instagram feed. The most elite coffee drinkers all the way down to Keurig stans need mug collections worthy of their caffeine. Don't sweat shipping delays. I hugged my father goodbye for the last time in a hospital room in March 2014. He was a seven-year survivor of pancreatic cancer. No one thought he'd make it much longer. He was laboring to breathe, and I was due on book tour. It was, he said to me, now or never, kid. Pride insisted he climb from the bed on his own. He had to negotiate around half a dozen tubes. But then he opened his arms to me and I fell into them as I had been doing for forty years. He whispered that he loved me and we wept and shook in each other's embrace, the profoundest love and the profoundest loss expressed in one gesture. Over our grief, neither of us could hear the cosmic laughter. For it is never two sad jerks in a hospital room who decide the when and where of a last goodbye. Five down, (probably) hundreds to go.
