Danny McBride once described the kind of characters he plays as "screwed up Don Quixotes." That was true of Kenny Powers, the delusional ex-baseball player who said some cringeworthy things, particularly to his girlfriend Katy Mixon, on his path to becoming a better man. The comparison works for Neil Gamby, too, a character McBride created who was even crueler and more mean-spirited than Kenny Powers for his follow-up HBO project, Vice Principals. But in his new show, The Righteous Gemstones, which just began airing its second season, McBride appears to be done with difficult men. The change comes just in the nick of time.
From the durable details to the beefed-up silhouettes, these kicks will get you from one snow-filled destination to the next. If you're familiar with Netflix's Sports Cinematic Universe—that is, director Greg Whiteley's trio of sports documentary series, Last Chance U, Last Chance U: Basketball, and Cheer—you know that one truth has governed these releases so far. That is: The head coach will always, always have a meltdown. Or two. Or three. At least until now. The NSCU changed forever last week, thanks to its newest coach, Trinity Valley Community College's Vontae Johnson. Introduced in Season Two of Cheer, over the course of the nine new episodes, he—rather remarkably considering the pandemic foiled his 2020 campaign—breaks the streak of memeable tirades. Here, he talks about masculinity in cheer, watching his competition's best (and worst) moments, and what he sees when he looks at that big ball of tape.
Start your 2022 off right by saving yourself some cash. While you work, while you cook, and while you zone out to trash TV. This Los Angeles hotel room brings back a lot of memories, mostly of the night I lost my gall bladder and then bled on George Clooney's couch. My recollection of the ordeal is patchy because of the unpleasant combination of drugs, digestive organ failure, and humiliation. But for the three people who know me and haven't heard this story, here is my best telling of it: It was my turn to write a Clooney cover story — his fourth for Esquire. I flew out here, pretty excited. On, I believe, the Wednesday of that week, he had his photo shoot. I went to say hey and to let him know that I was looking forward to our interview, which was scheduled for that Friday, I think. He seemed very cool and relaxed, and he asked me what I was going to do in the time in between. I told him I was thinking of going to a small Mexican town called Tijuana, so if I didn't show up on Friday, I was dead, in jail, or in a hospital. Funny, right?
