When I was a kid back in the early nineties, my parents ran a Thai restaurant and a small Asian grocery that sold—along with hard-to-find ingredients for Thai cooking—a bottled drink from Thailand called Krating Daeng. English translation: Red Bull. My older cousins and youngish uncles all drank it—always in the evening, before going out. Naturally, I wanted a taste of the lifestyle that this elixir offered. It just happened that, by the time I was an adult, Red Bull had been paired with another beverage to create a new classic (even more turbo) cocktail: the Red Bull Vodka. |

Keyboards and screens may be necessary evils, but a great pen is an underrated joy. You feel a lot more put together when you carry a nice pen, a nice lighter, and a pocket knife with you every day, everywhere you go. So what's the amount of money I can reasonably spend on a pen? About $20. Until I get a big salary, become an investment banker, or give up and try law school (all unlikely), there's only one pen I'm going to keep on me every day. It's the Parker Jotter. |

On Tuesday, in the Supreme Court of the United States, reality went up on trial. (Tell you the truth, given the Roberts Court's track record, and given the carefully manufactured conservative majority, if I'd been reality's lawyer, I'd have moved for a change of venue.) And, mirabile dictu, it appears that even the carefully manufactured conservative majority found itself offered a guided tour of Bananaland that even its members declined to take. What, you may ask, is the Alliance For Hippocratic Medicine? Glad you asked. |
