I've been visiting the City of Lights regularly for years, as a tourist, journalist, and now, semi-local. (My husband grew up there, which means we head back every chance we get for family gatherings, birthdays, holidays, and why-the-hell-not visits.) Most recently, we stayed at The Experimental Marais, in one of the city's coolest neighborhoods. Paris is the last place where you should be cooped up in a hotel room all day long. You should be perusing museums, shops, restaurants, and all the things that made you book that flight in the first place. But would it feel like Paris if there wasn't just a little bit of charm where you slept?   In the past five years, Paris has seen more hotel openings that most major cities worldwide. Institutions like Le Meurice and the Ritz still reign supreme, but its latest additions offer new gems in different neighborhoods with chic decor themes that'll leave an impression long after you've left. I spent part of grad school working at a river outfitter in Flagstaff, Arizona, gearing up private float trips down the Grand Canyon. (You have to be prepared to do anything to fund a poetry degree.) Food prep was part of our service. We had a "proprietary" method of flash freezing meals in varying amounts of ice, calculated to thaw at the exact moment you needed it on your three-week expedition. I didn't question the science. But I did take note of the coolers. The only two brands we trusted to sustain our paying customers were Flagstaff's own Canyon Coolers and the big dog in the cooler fight: Yeti.
