The Fourth of July isn't an indoor holiday. You spend it outside—grilling, lounging by water, blowing off fireworks. But there will come a time this weekend when air conditioning is needed. This moment calls for a movie. A big one. A film that stirs your patriotic instincts, makes you nostalgic for that summer feeling, or just plain terrifies you. Esquire's entertainment editors selected the 15 best flicks for the Fourth of July weekend, and there's no shortage of big movies. Enjoy your weekend. – Michael Sebastian, editor-in-chief Plus: |

Whether you're looking for a heavy dive into our nation's history, or simply a romp that takes place on Fourth of July weekend, we have you covered. |
We know that you'll likely spend most of the weekend outside, but you'll need something to watch as you wind down each night. And you'll want something patriotic, but not too patriotic—we wouldn't exactly call this the proudest time in our country's history. For that, we recommend something light, like The Sandlot or National Treasure. Or, you could watch something that reminds you of the days when American leaders were interested in changing this country for the better. A lost art! Fire up Lincoln and Selma, in that case. At the very least, these movies (Independence Day, especially) will help you tune out the sound of your neighbors blowing up illegal fireworks in their backyards. |

She was wearing a silver bracelet that attached to a silver ring via a slim chain, as if her wrist were holding her hand prisoner in a nice little metaphoric S&M. I told her I thought the bracelet/ring assembly was cool. Very soon after that, I was sitting next to her. Very soon after that, I touched the bracelet, and a warning, my saner self, clicked on: You've done it, you've ... I kissed her, right there at the bar, and even as our lips met, I was thinking of the point of no return, which I had just passed. When I got home, Karen was asleep. I took a shower, something I rarely did at night, got in bed with her, and that was that. The next morning was like other mornings, except I am not usually hungover or thinking what a jerk I am. I lay on the floor reading the paper; Karen left on an errand. She returned a minute later holding a pack of cigarettes. "Whose are these?" Neither of us smoked. "I found them in the car." I looked hard at those cigarettes, then it came to me: "Oh," I said, my eyes casually drifting back to the paper, "I gave somebody a ride home from work." Karen looked at me for a moment. I know this because out of the corner of my eye I could see her shoes. They were black. They were not moving. Then she left. |

A good pair of travel pants is a critical item to have in your wardrobe. It's probably one of the last things on your mind when you're preparing for a trip, but it's the bedrock of your long-haul flight or overnight roadtrip getup. What you wear to the airport sets the tone for how your trip is going to go, and there's nothing worse than being uncomfortable when you're stuck in a middle seat. So invest in a pair of travel pants. Whether you're looking for a pair to designate to long-haul flights, short weekend jaunts, Amtrak endeavors, road trips, or even just for your office commute, travel pants come in all forms. Sure, there's the classic jogger from a trusty performance wear brand (cough, cough, Vuori), but we'd recommend trying something more dressed up in a wider cut and hard-wearing fabric with apair of loafers. (Maybe even a cowboy boot?) If that's not your speed, there's plenty of stretch chinos to pair with white sneakers and call it a day. | |
