I know what you're thinking. How on Earth can you complicate wearing a swimsuit? You put it on; you go in the water. Done deal. I get where you're coming from. If all you want to do when it gets hot is grab whatever you have lying around and start splashing, you are absolutely free to do so. It's summer, which is not the time to worry unnecessarily. It's the time to take it easy and enjoy yourself by the pool, at the beach—hell, even running through a sprinkler.
Ah, but there's the rub. Because this is the season when swimwear becomes not just an occasional necessity but a staple of your off-duty wardrobe. So, we're going to get into those nuances. Sex in movies got an extremely high profile cosign at this year's Academy Awards, when the sex-work dramedy Anora took home five of the six trophies it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director (Sean Baker), and Best Actress (Mikey Madison in the title role). It's major recognition for a film that was not only drenched in sex, but it indicates that the stodgy old Academy is opening its collective mind, or at least willing to pretend to do so from time to time.
Otherwise, we've yet to really feel the full force of what 2025 has to offer in terms of sex in cinema, but if the Sundance Film Festival, which kicked off in January, is any indication, there's a lot that's coming our way.
