Trump’s NBC Town Hall Was Unfiltered Insanity

Also, that he has no plan for any issue facing the United States at this time. He has no second-term agenda.

At the NBC Town Hall, the President Demonstrated That He Is Completely Insane

NBC was kind enough to broadcast to the world, yet again, that the President of the United States is completely insane. At one point during a town hall in Miami on Thursday night, Donald Trump explained that he shared a conspiracy theory with his 87 million Twitter followers alleging Joe Biden helped orchestrate the killing of Seal Team 6 members—to cover up that the Osama bin Laden assassination was, in this formulation, faked—on the following basis: "That was a retweet. That was an opinion of somebody. And that was a retweet. I put it out there, people can decide for themselves." Elsewhere here, the president was able to simply denounce white supremacy this time, having kicked off a flurry of excitement and activity among the right-wing paramilitary set with his inability to do so two weeks ago. It's a low bar, sure, but he failed to clear one of similar height when it came to a question on QAnon. But even beyond the nutso elements—on whether he got tested before the last presidential debate, the president offered, "I test quite a bit, I test all the time, I don't even remember, I probably did, I possibly didn't"—there is the more basic element that the president does not have any goals or plans for the country he's asking to lead for four more years. Here's Politics Editor Jack Holmes on the latest demonstration of the president's alternate reality. Read More

The 20 Best Scarves to Protect Your Neck This Fall

The scarf is a delicate thing. Successfully nailing the look in a way that doesn't immediately announce to everyone around you "Yo, I'm wearing a scarf!!" calls for a rare blend of studied casualness and a touch—and only a touch—of bold, unbridled confidence. Pay too much attention to the intricacies of your neckwear and you risk looking affected, like the horn-rimmed graduate student who led that Classics seminar you took freshman year (a.k.a., the type of dude your grandmother would've considered "dapper"). Pay too little attention to it, though, and your scarf will end up flailing helplessly behind you in the wind or, worse yet, dangling limply around your chest like some sad Little League participation medal. The secret, then, lies in finding a balance somewhere in between. An intricately patterned version wrapped babushka-like around your head is the preferred look of style mavericks like A$AP Rocky, but if that feels too swerve-y (which, okay, fair), casually drape that thing around your neck and carry on. If function is the primary goal—function? I haven't heard that name in years!—try a soft cashmere style looped once and knotted securely to defend yourself from the elements (and from anyone mistaking you for the person they're supposed to meet with to discuss their essay on Ancient Greek literature). Here are 20 scarves we're digging right now. Read More

The Hands-Down Best Rye Whiskey to Drink Right Now

The rules for rye whiskey are simple: The mash bill must be at least 51 percent rye (whiskeys released right at this minimum percentage are sometimes referred to as "barely legal"), it must be distilled to no more than 160 proof, and it must be aged in new charred oak containers (virtually always barrels). Unlike bourbon, flavor and coloring actually can be added to rye whiskey, unless it is designated as "straight" rye whiskey (which also means that it's at least two years old). There are also plenty of rye whiskeys being made in Kentucky, New York, Colorado, and every other state in the union, with mash bills ranging from 51 to sometimes 100 percent rye. And yes, there are many craft distilleries making commendable rye whiskeys—including Wigle, 291 Distillery, and Hotaling & Co.—that are starting to really compete with the old guard. Here are 10 of the best (and most readily available) rye whiskeys you can find today. Read More

David Byrne and Spike Lee Take You Inside HBO's American Utopia

In the summer of 2019, before the start of the show's run on Broadway, David Byrne had the idea to adapt it for the screen. He invited Spike Lee, whom he'd been friendly with for years, to attend previews, then asked whether he'd like to direct. Lee loved the show—and the idea. The result, which comes out on HBO tomorrow, October 17, is not a glorified theatrical recording. It's a real film. It's also their first collaboration. Although both made a name for themselves in New York, Lee, who's sixty-three, came along a few years after Byrne, who's sixty-eight. For our October/November cover story, Byrne and Lee took us inside their epic collaboration, their life in 2020, and offered up a little much-needed wisdom for what's ahead.
