Any attempt at a list of 'best' horror novels is doomed to disagreement. That's fine. All lists are subjective. We have, however, tried to celebrate the breadth of horror—to highlight those books that establish something about the genre or push it forward into new realms. You will see some unexpected inclusions in this list, and some surprising absences. Certain big names are missing because their greatest contributions are in short form, or because their books tread ground better traveled by others. Equally, some of these choices may cause horror fans' eyes to wrinkle in confusion. But perhaps, in the end, that's the secret of horror: it's personal. It's about how it makes you feel. Here, then, is our ranking of the best horror novels of all time.
Presenting yourself professionally in a, well, professional setting should never be forgotten. We've never been so enticed to microwave—yes, microwave—our bacon. Over the weekend, some of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh's neighbors invited some friends over to explain to His Honor that they were not pleased with him. I thought they might've gathered to ask him how those debts got paid off. But no, the crowd wanted to comment upon the leaked opinion overturning reproductive freedom authored by Justice Samuel Alito, in which Kavanaugh reportedly has joined. This has given the vapors to elements of the courtier press. And sadly, among some Democrats, a five-alarm Civility Emergency was declared quite quickly.
Because even an entry-level timepiece deserves a nice off-the-wrist home. Time—and money—well spent. Fall, 1982. A new freshman class arrives at arty, louche, and expensive Bennington College. Among the druggies, rebels, heirs, and posers: future Gen X literary stars Donna Tartt, Bret Easton Ellis, and Jonathan Lethem. What happened over the next four years would spark scandal, myth, and some of the authors' greatest novels. Return to a campus and an era like no other.
