This Los Angeles hotel room brings back a lot of memories, mostly of the night I lost my gall bladder and then bled on George Clooney's couch. My recollection of the ordeal is patchy because of the unpleasant combination of drugs, digestive organ failure, and humiliation. But for the three people who know me and haven't heard this story, here is my best telling of it: It was my turn to write a Clooney cover story — his fourth for Esquire. I flew out here, pretty excited. On, I believe, the Wednesday of that week, he had his photo shoot. I went to say hey and to let him know that I was looking forward to our interview, which was scheduled for that Friday, I think. He seemed very cool and relaxed, and he asked me what I was going to do in the time in between. I told him I was thinking of going to a small Mexican town called Tijuana, so if I didn't show up on Friday, I was dead, in jail, or in a hospital.
Consider them the cornerstone of your warm-weather wardrobe. "I want a hit show so f***ing bad," Spencer Pratt yells. He's sitting on a couch inside the corporate headquarters of cannabis startup Cannabiotix, a sprawling manufacturing plant and office space in Cudahy, California, 10 miles southeast of Downtown L.A., tucked against the 710 freeway. His comment isn't directed at anyone; it's Pratt thinking to himself. But the 38-year-old, never one to hold his tongue, vocalizes the sentiment to the small film crew he's contracted to help produce a sizzle reel for what, he hopes, will turn him into a multi-millionaire reality TV mogul.
In a crowded market of celebrity booze—tequilas, especially—the actor launched his brand with a product designed to stand out. Our number one pick has inspired generations of nightmares. The mounting emergencies of the modern world—suicides, homelessness, climate disasters— are now prevalent in America's most beautiful places: its wilderness parks. The rangers who care for them wonder how long they can last. Welcome to the front lines of the new great outdoors.
