Buying a proper pair of dress shoes is no easy task. Sure, there are apps and algorithms that make it seem as if it is, so they can funnel you toward a purchase that probably won’t work but will definitely line the pockets of some tech bro who doesn’t care about your style or comfort. There are more than a few unscrupulous salesmen who are willing to do the same IRL. But the fact of the matter is, investing in quality footwear requires some real (ahem) footwork to find the right fit and the right style—in short, the right dress shoes for you.
You know this already, but here’s the crux of the matter: Wearing the wrong dress shoe hurts. The physical pain comes first, often in the form of pinched toes and blisters. The psychological pain follows shortly thereafter, when you realize that a few hundred of your hard-earned dollars have been transformed into a pair of oxfords or loafers or derbies that you simply can’t wear anymore. I have experienced these pains more times than I’d like to admit, and I’m hoping that this article can save you from them.
