You already know that Tom Hardy is the UK’s favorite tough-guy leading man. But did you also know that he’s something of a sneakerhead? The pair that caught our eyes recently is actually pretty easy to get your hands on. It’s made by Vans, protected by a layer of Gore-Tex—and maybe the next addition to your winter footwear rotation. —Jonathan Evans, style director

The Crosspath XC Gore-Tex shoes are designed for tricky trails and mountainsides. Our guy Hardy wears them for whatever life throws at him.

Tom Hardy is a tough guy, and not only because his surname says so. His many roles—from an ex-Marine mixed martial arts fighter in Warrior and the super-hench super villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, to Charles Bronson, Britain’s most notorious violent prisoner, and underground fixer Harry de Souza in MobLand—have helped cast him as the UK’s leading hard man.
Naturally, that toughness creeps into his everyday life. Even his footwear. Now, Hardy is a bit of a sneakerhead. He has the Supreme X Air Jordan 5s in “Desert Camo” and black Off-White X Air Jordan 5s in his arsenal. But he went particularly hard with his footwear when he attended a BGC Group Charity Day, alongside his co-star Helen Mirren, in a pair of all-terrain, seriously tough Vans.

Glen Powell, the breakout movie star of the 2020s, is griping to his delightfully sleazy manager. Glen Powell’s character is griping, rather. A country crooner whose career has gone sideways. He’s pissed about having wasted a bunch of time writing a bunch of terrible songs with even worse collaborators. Too many whiskey dicks, pills, and prostitutes. In the lyrics or among the collaborators? I can’t say—I’ve been sworn to secrecy. What I can tell you is that his manager, played by comedian Stavros Halkias, gives just as good right back.
We’re in Savannah, in early June. Powell is filming the country-music comedy The Comeback King, which comes out in February, with bromance auteur Judd Apatow. He’s laying his frustration on thick, but the mood in the room is light. “Hey, Jacob,” he calls out to a camera tech at one point. “Can you run that back?” He wants to check a previous take for continuity. Put your prostitutes before your pills and it all falls apart.

You’ve seen it, surely. If you’re clued in to this stuff like I am, you have seen Paravel in just about every airport you’ve been in over the past decade. Those beach totes, that bright nylon duffel bag, or those plastic suitcases with the faux-leather handles. But in May of last year, the site went down out of the blue, and Paravel filed for chapter 7. Outlets like The Strategist covered the liquidation sale, and brand fans (my mother being one of them) made sure to stock up in case this was the last we’d ever see of Paravel.
But business this big usually gets another life. The Paravel intellectual property was acquired by the ATR Group, a British company known for owning the luggage brand Antler, by August. It appeared this phoenix would, indeed, rise from the ashes. We made jokes about it in the Esquire office, expecting a stale remake of the luggage we already knew. But when the new Paravel site went live on October 8, we actually—maybe not against all odds, but against what we expected—really loved the new look.
