25 Pairs of Shorts to Keep You Cool This Summer

Shorts, my friends, are good. Not just good, but great! The right pair of shorts will take virtually any summer outfit and render it [pause for dramatic effect] actually comfortable. Forget about sweating through your favorite tee-and-camp-collar-shirt combo. Abandon all anxiety about overheating while simply popping down the corner for a (cold brew) coffee. Just wear some damn shorts. Styles ranging from the leg-baring 5-inch inseam to longer, more voluminous options that borrow from basketball shorts and fashion shorts alike are on the table (proverbially speaking; literally speaking, they should be on your legs). However you want to play it, start with this list. Read More

I've Fallen for the SoulCycle At Home Bike and All the Life-Coach Speak That Comes With It

Dave Holmes has used SoulCycle's At-Home spin bike pretty much daily for six weeks now, and the only flaw I can find in it is himself. "There's a bright, crisp, 21.5-inch high-resolution touchscreen on this bike, and though it's sweat-proof and anti-glare, it is glass, so there I am, reflected in it," Holmes writes. "I tilt the screen up and see my pink, straining face, I tilt it down and get a perfectly cropped snapshot of the spare tire I've inflated over lockdown. In time, I can look through my reflection and into the spin studio, I can get caught up in another challenging class with thumping music and intense encouragement, I can lose myself. Then 45 minutes pass, the class ends, the screen goes dark, and there I am again. But even with me in it, the bike is a fantastic product." Read More

The Crime Novelist Who Wrote His Own Death Scene

He was a powerfully built man, six feet tall and two hundred pounds, with thick, dark hair, a prominent nose, piercing eyes, and an intensity that electrified some people and intimidated others. On December 7, 1996, he committed suicide in a spectacular fashion, after leaving a trail of clues designed to lead the police and the public to conclude that he'd been murdered by an Indiana militia group. For a while, his colleagues in the midwestern chapter of the Mystery Writers of America—novelists whose minds run in winding channels of plots and conspiracies—bought into his fiction. Within hours after he'd been found hanging out the window of his fourteenth-floor office in Chicago's Loop, they began issuing statements that Izzi, who had a reputation for taking risks to gather material for his novels, could not have died by his own hand. The ever-competitive Chicago media printed and broadcast these pronouncements, and soon Izzi's death had become a whodunit, with all the melodramatic elements of the potboilers he wrote.
