The 50 Best Christmas Movies of All Time

Christmas movies are a strange breed. If you want a holiday movie with Arnold Schwartzenegger, you can have it. You want Cameron Diaz singing Green Day in an empty cottage in an English Village? It exists. If you want many movies that have almost the exact same title, but in some cases literally the same title, this genre has you covered. You want near-elf castrations? Oh you better believe it exists. There's horror. There's comedy. There is never a lack of options—good, bad, or confusing—that can fill the many hours of the holiday season. Read More

We Are in The Golden Era of So-Bad-They're-Good Holiday Movies

This is the most wonderful time to be alive for a fan of the so-bad-it's-good holiday movie. Simultaneously beloved and maligned, the holiday movie goes back more than a century, and includes a few beloved classics, but overwhelmingly, far more low-budget, D-list, made-for-TV films. For me, a teetotaler who loves to throw back an entire bottle of Yellowtail and yell at Candace Cameron Buré, it was the latter. Bad holiday films are an event. (This post contains spoilers.) There were a few moments in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker when I thought, genuinely, that I was watching Marriage Story 2: The Rise of Charlie. Before we get to the big boss fight against Grandpappy Palps at the end of the movie, we see quite a few scenes of Rey and Kylo either taunting each other via Force Skype, or fighting with lightsabers and such IRL. And Adam Driver's turn as Kylo Ren, in its angstiest moments, channels that same energy that made him punch a wall and accidentally cut himself in Marriage Story. Read More

I Spent a Year Wrestling With the Metaphysics of The Muppet Christmas Carol

In December 20, 2017, I set out to write an essay about the metaphysical mysteries of The Muppet Christmas Carol. It was the film's 25th anniversary and the perfect time to reflect on this complex children's adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic. My central question about the film was this: Why is Scrooge unable to see Gonzo and Rizzo until the closing moments of the movie? Read More

My Grandpop's Boozy Ice Cream Eggnog Recipe Always Beats the Homemade Stuff

On Christmas morning, right after the 8 a.m. gift exchange and ceremonial yawn, the first thing my mom does before putting the turkey in the oven is flip over a carton of ice cream into a punch bowl. A whole carton, half vanilla, half chocolate. There the ice cream sits all afternoon, melting in the punch bowl as my family races to get the house ready for company. Read More
