The Perfect Winter Coat for Under $50? It Exists.

Is there a lot to appreciate about warm-weather dressing? Absolutely. Give us a camp-collar shirt and a drink with a little umbrella in it and we're nothing if not content. But give us a gigantic swath of fabric and a few strategically placed buttons to shield us from the cold, and we're positively giddy. In this golden age of outerwear, you don't have to lay out all that cash if you don't want to. Instead, you could shell out just under $50 and find yourself possessed of a damn good balmacaan—a time-tested, raglan-sleeved topcoat that you can wear with everything from a hoodie and jeans to your sharpest suit—from Uniqlo. It's a poly/rayon/acrylic blend that's designed to feel soft, not scratchy, and still ably fend off the early-morning chill. And owing to the way Uniqlo has sized its generously cut offering—which is 50 percent off its original price of $99.90, which means it's final sale—you'll want to take a size smaller than normal. Carhartt's Warm, Winterproof Watch Hat Is a Modern Menswear Icon That Looks Good on Everyone

Before you read this, take a glance outside. (Go on. I'll wait.) If the street directly below your bedroom window isn't blanketed in a foot of snow, consider yourself lucky. Because a historically bad winter storm dumped a metric fuckton of slush across the Northeast earlier this week, and conditions outside are still brutal. It's cold. It's blustery. It's damn near unbearable. All of which means you need a beanie, STAT. The right beanie will make everything a little less cold, less blustery, less damn-near-unbearable. And when it comes to beanies, no style reigns more supreme than Carhartt's acrylic watch hat, the iconic everyman option the workwear brand has been churning out for decades on end. If you're looking for a hat that'll see you through the worst of winter, and then some, look no further. Here it is. Read More

These Super Bowl TV Deals Are the Best We've Seen Since Black Friday

This may come as a bit of a shock, but it is already time for Super Bowl LV. It is certainly a strange time for sports, and sports fandom, but regardless of what is going on in the world, the game is still being played this year. Luckily, we can still watch from home, even if normal Super Bowl parties are off the table. Since you're saving some money by not buying party-sized pizza and wings, you could take that extra cash and capitalize on some of the best TV deals outside of Black Friday. Not only are there big promotions leading up to the game, but most TV manufacturers just announced their 2021 TV lineup, so they're looking to sell out of last year's TVs. The Super Bowl is February 7, so if you are aiming to get a new TV for the game, you're going to want to order it as soon as possible. If you don't care about the game, no problem — but these deals won't last long either. Read More

The Best Zip-Up Hoodies Are So Much Cooler Than You Remember

The zip-up hoodie gets a bad rap. Close associations with a certain bumbling tech billionaire have turned the once innocuous style into fashion anathema, a far cry from the days of Steve Jobs and his enviable rotation of identical Issey Miyake mock necks. The zip-up, though, deserves your respect. Its merits are self-evident. And if the scores of (very good!) options available now are any indication, the industry's coming round to the idea, too. Which means today's zip-up sweatshirts often look as handsome as they feel soft—so long as you take the time to pick a grown-up version, and then style it with purpose. With all that in mind, here are some of the best zip-up hoodies on the market today—none of which, it should be noted, will make you look like a dead-eyed internet magnate hellbent on upending the foundations of American democracy. Republicans Have a Major Problem. Soon It Could Be Everyone's Problem.

House minority leader Kevin McCarthy, who apparently can be held up by mail, has been jacked into pairing up disciplinary actions against both Marjorie Taylor Greene and Liz Cheney, the former for being an out-of-control QAnon nutball, and the latter for having supported the impeachment of the previous president* on a charge of incitement of insurrection. That the Republican leader felt compelled to equate these two offenses should tell you all you need to know about the current state of the Republican Party and the current state of McCarthy's leadership position. Nobody is under control in that party and that's going to lead to a kind of general dysfunction that will guarantee that there will be more MTG's elected, which will lead to less control, which will lead to a kind of future in which the Kevin McCarthys will find themselves lost in a sea of empowered insanity. And that will be everybody's problem, writes Charles P. Pierce. Read More
