The Democratic National Convention Speaker List Is a Look at the Party's Identity Crisis

While the sitting president spent his morning chatting with his therapists on Fox & Friends, the Democratic Party was busy laying bare the basic conflicts between its present and its future. The folks running the Democratic National Convention released a new list of event speakers, including those slated to speak during the convention's opening night on Monday, and it was fairly revelatory revelatory regarding the Biden campaign's strategy. In short, a slate of Republicans have secured themselves speaking slots. Including former New York Congresswoman Susan Molinari and former Ohio Governor John Kasich. It's easy to make the case that the 2020 election is an all-hands-on-deck exercise, as the incumbent poses a clear and present danger to the American republic. He is currently attempting to rig the election itself. This probably does weigh more than differences on individual policies. But as with all the dark money Democrats are taking these days, Politics Editor Jack Holmes asks, where does this all lead? Read More

The 21 Best Things to Buy From Todd Snyder's Blowout Summer Sale

If the dog days of summer have you pining for cooler weather—and the layering opportunities it provides!—you, sir, are onto something. Todd Snyder knows what you're thinking. He's heard your disgruntled asides and, like a particularly benevolent Greek god descending from menswear's Mount Olympus, he's here to provide you with the sustenance you need to make it to fall. The designer's latest sale includes more than enough heat to satisfy those still looking to score big on last-minute summer wardrobe additions, but it also comes chock full of autumn-ready staples in the hearty, comforting fabrics you've been looking forward to reuniting yourself with for months. It's hard to say where any of us will be at the end of summer this year, but any imminent return to pre-pandemic normal seems highly unlikely. The Todd Snyder sale is a welcome reminder of what could've been, and what could still be, if only we'd open ourselves up to the idea of swapping out our sweatpants for, uh, literally anything else. (Not to worry—he's got sweatpants too! Lots of 'em, in fact. The man is nothing if not prepared.) Happy shopping, folks. Keep those chins up. Read More

A Comprehensive Guide to Monsters in HBO's Lovecraft Country

Late in the first episode of Lovecraft Country, which debuted on HBO Sunday night, you're watching a pretty intense standoff between Atticus, Leti, Uncle George, and a group of racist police officers. Until… freakish, scary-as-hell monsters jump out from the woods and slice one of the officers' arms clean off. In the next couple minutes, we learn the monsters are sensitive to light, can make humans into monsters with so much as a bite, and are maybe/maybe-not vampires. If you're like Esquire's Brady Langmann, and knew an embarrassingly small amount about H.P. Lovecraft going into a show with his damn name in it, the sudden appearance of giant bear vampires is just a little bit disconcerting. Plus, since we don't really get a legal name for the monsters, even, it's hard to trace whatever the hell monster shows up in Lovecraft Country to a specific work of the late science fiction and horror writer. For legitimate days after watching the premiere, Langmann bombarded Google with a vague smattering of Lovecraft, vampire, slobber, monster, teeth, and couldn't really find much—until a colleague shared what must be the version of the Bible for Lovecraftian monsters with me. Here's what you need to know from his learnings. Read More

The New Adidas Superstar Cleat Is What Happens When Sneaker Culture and the Golf World Get It Right

The world of golf apparel has come a long way. No longer are weekends spent on the course (or watching the pros do their thing on TV) full of oversized polos and pants that don't fit. Players are trading the traditionally mocked attire for more modern, on-trend fits that don't skimp on performance either. Nowhere is this shift more apparent than in the footwear realm. Sneaker culture and the golf world have had some impressive collisions over the past few years, and perhaps no more impressive than the arrival of Adidas's limited-edition, on-course version of its most iconic silhouette—the Superstar. Esquire's Ben Boskovich took them for a spin, and makes the case for why they should be your new (and even forever) golf shoe. Read More
