The Best Books to Elevate Your Reading List in 2020

Remember the summer reading programs at your local library? Maybe you took part in a program like Book It! and read your way to free personal pan pizzas, or maybe your library opted for something more local and individualized. Whatever your summer reading diet looked like as a child, it's a damn shame libraries don't celebrate summer reading among adults—but that doesn't mean you can't craft your own summer reading curriculum, complete with its own schedule and rewards system. Our favorite books of 2020 are the ideal place to start. Whether you're looking to lose yourself in a novel that will transport you to another place or explore the multifaceted world of short stories, there's something here for you. Our favorite reads of the year range from incisive reporting on hot button subjects like Silicon Valley and the housing crisis to exemplary, absorbing fiction about such diverse subjects as family, identity, and romance. With a slate of books this good, you'll be very busy trying to squeeze another hour of reading into your day. Watch this space—we'll be adding more as the year progresses. Read More

The Best Picks From Nordstrom's Annual Anniversary Sale to Shop Now

If—somehow—you managed to make it all this time on God's not-so-green earth without knowing about the annual Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, well, you're going to learn today. For the uninitiated, the Anniversary Sale is the Seattle-based retailer's much-anticipated yearly summer blowout, featuring steep discounts across a broad array of new arrivals. For deal-savvy clotheshorses, it's like Christmas come early. Or, put another way, it's the Super Bowl of shopping (with equally high stakes for everyone involved). In prior years, the sale started in mid-July, but what with the world just up and going to shit recently, Nordstrom decided to postpone the eagerly anticipated event until August 19, with early access for Nordy Club members starting on August 13. (It'll run through August 30.) So mark your calendars, because this is one you don't want to miss. For reference, people typically start counting down the days ahead of the official start of the sale weeks in advance. Read More

Get Noah's Just-Bold-Enough Hoodie Now, Before It Sells Out (Again)

Esquire Style Director Jonathan Evans is, if you care to be generous in your naming of it, a 'hoodie enthusiast.' If you care to be ungenerous, you could say that he clearly has a problem, and you wouldn't necessarily be wrong. But please, let his unhealthy fascination with this ostensibly simple but mystifyingly enticing item of clothing guide you on your quest to a great hoodie, sans the stumbling block of ostracizing the people who care about your wellbeing. Just get yourself Noah's tricolor hoodie—which is all but gone from Noah's digital shelves, but now available again, at least for the time being, thanks to the brand's latest drop with Nordstrom—and settle into its warm embrace while simultaneously basking in the love of kith and kin. They really do just want the best for you. Read More

For Tonight: Make a Brain Duster Cocktail and Get Out of That Funk

A funk. A flop. An unending slog of rather dull days. A repeating loop of boredom. Those stretches of time hit, when your attitude about everything could be described as eh. There's really no avoiding them. But maybe a routine-upender is in order. You know, something that challenges you. Makes you think. Like a really strange, off-kilter cocktail, for instance. We have one in mind. The Brain-Duster is a potent blend of rye whiskey, absinthe, Italian vermouth, and bitters. It is not at all subtle in flavor, tasting much like a Manhattan with a little something extra coming from the absinthe. And with absinthe creeping back into cocktail culture more and more these days, it's not a bad idea to have a bottle of the good stuff at your disposal. To dust off the cobwebs in your brain, so to speak. Read More

There's Never Been a Better Time to Buy a USPS Tee

Since the late 1700s, the United States Postal Service has delivered mail—through rain, snow, sleet, or shine—to Americans across the country, wherever they may be. These days, though, the storied institution you love to hate is in a state of crisis. Its leadership is, to put it extremely mildly, in a state of disarray. It faces increasingly fierce competition from relative upstarts like FedEx. And now the president of the whole damn country is casting aspersions on the veracity of mail-in voting in a shameless attempt to suppress voter turnout this upcoming election. The USPS needs your help. But don't do it for me. Don't even do it for them. Do it for yourself. Because, like any respectable government institution worth its weight in Forever Stamps, the USPS happens to stock some of the sweetest officially licensed merchandise around, including a selection of tees that telegraph your support via endearingly on-the-nose messaging. The Best Shows on Netflix to Binge This Weekend

At this point, you've reached old age in your long, storied Netflix-subscribing tenure. As a loyal, years-long subscriber, you may have reached a point where nightly binges start blending into your subconscious, your dreams indistinguishable from the stories beaming from your laptop. (Which tends to happen when you spend a weekend going: Wake, Netflix, sleep, rinse, repeat.) Was that you who owned an illicit tiger zoo in your youth? Maybe you're under the impression you can bake a sourdough loaf with the perfect crumb. Or, if you close your eyes and concentrate really hard, you can manipulate and bend the four elements. You think you hear a laugh track cackling from behind you every time you make a joke. Anyway. Imagined or not, this all sounds a hell of a lot better than real life. So keep it up, intrepid dreamer, with the best shows Netflix has to offer. Read More
