The James Bond you see onscreen is famously an Omega guy—but he's not the only Bond. This week, Charlie Higson's new 007 novel King Zero was released. In it, the spy wears a watch that's unexpected, but very appropriate. The timepiece in question is by Vertex, a British brand with a history worth learning all about. The latest 007 has gone back to World War II for a surprisingly obscure British watch.

We may still be waiting to discover who will become the next James Bond. But we now know what 007 is wearing on his wrist. And no, it’s not an Omega.
In King Zero, Charlie Higson’s new Bond novel that releases today, a contemporary 35-year-old 007 wears an original wartime Vertex Cal. 59, inherited from a great-uncle who served with the 6th Airborne Division at Pegasus Bridge on D-Day. Higson describes the watch as holding “a host of memories” for Bond and as “a solid reminder of the real world,” bringing him back to his senses
It’s a deep-cut choice but a good one.

In the late 2000s, Chris Hansen had everyone squirming in their seats. The host of To Catch a Predator, as part of NBC’s Dateline, was the face of the infamous reality show in which men soliciting sex from minors were caught on camera. The show’s meteoric rise and violent downfall are retold in Lance Oppenheim’s Primetime, with an Oscar-ready Robert Pattinson in the lead role as Hansen. But how much does Primetime actually get right about what went down?
Luckily, we don’t have to look too far. In September 2007, Esquire (that’s us!) published “Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die” by Luke Dittrich, which serves as the basis for Primetime and is identified as such in the credits. Dittrich’s feature goes into granular detail over the real-life circumstances of the suicide that Primetime frames as the end of its story and the end of To Catch a Predator.

Pierce Brosnan can’t deny it. He’s one debonair son of a bitch.
007. Remington Steele. The architect heartthrob in Mamma Mia. Brosnan doesn’t dispute the characterization of his screen presence. In fact, he adds another title to the list. “Thomas Crown…” he says, sitting on an outdoor deck at the London hotel in West Hollywood as the sun begins to set. It’s not all an act: “I love clothes. I love style. I love the joy of that romantic lifestyle and those movies. It’s a part of me as an actor.” But he’s done that long enough. “You then have to dismantle it,” he says.
MobLand has allowed him to lean into the profane part of that identity, shoving aside the savoir faire and letting him bare his teeth and empty his clips with ruthless abandon. His gang leader Conrad Harrigan was always explosively unpredictable in the Paramount+ series, but with season 2 now under way, viewers are seeing Brosnan’s character fray at the edges as he becomes ever more chaotic and bloodthirsty.
