Though it’s more of a nose-to-the-grindstone sort of season in the corporate world, fall might be the best one we have for slowing down and getting outside. Nature’s colors come alive before winter’s desolation, and while your tan may start to fade, running or hiking in the crisp air definitely beats logging miles—or climbing a mountain—in the brutal summer heat. I’m deep into the college-search process with my two high school daughters. College fairs. Arcane admissions data. Mailboxes stuffed with brochures from schools you’ve never heard of. We, as a family, have toured an even ten. They are starting to blend together. Lots of stonework . . . huge bookstores . . . minuscule dorm rooms. At the end of every tour, we look at one another and say, “This feels like it could be the one.” My own personal Groundhog Day.
It was when I started talking to friends who already have kids in college that I realized I was going about this all wrong. Among my generation, a new way to pick colleges has emerged. I call it the Do-Over.
Everybody wishes they could relive their college years. Well, you can. Not by going back to school yourself—that would include all the boring parts—but by steering your college-bound kids to what you miss (or failed to experience the first time around).

I know what you’re thinking. Labor Day is nearly here. A brisk morning breeze is no longer a fantasy but an occasional reality. Kids are heading back to school. It’s time for fall, baby!
It’s a nice thought, but let’s be real. We’ve got a whole lot of hot days ahead of us before the calendar actually flips over to autumn—and probably a good few after that, too. The seasonal vibe shift might have arrived, but in our brave new world, the weather takes awhile to catch up.
So while layering on the fall finery sounds downright enchanting, it’s really a siren song destined to dash you on the rocks of sweaty afternoons and stifling commutes. That doesn’t mean you can’t change up your look, though. You just need to be careful and play by the new rules of dressing for (early) fall.
