The Midterm Elections Could Be Hacked and We Won't Know Until It's Too Late

Republican-controlled states have adopted a swathe of policies to try to depress turnout, particularly among groups-people of color, younger people-who tend to vote for Democrats. In a sick twist, these efforts may actually provide some of the very best cover for potential election hackers. Election-security types says there's a chance, and not a particularly small one, that citizens could be struck from the voter rolls not by any legal or official mechanism, but by a hacker. People could be robbed of their registration-and thus, their voting rights-and never even know it. Read More

Kansas Has the Chance to Reject an Entire Toxic Governing Philosophy

The clouds are dark and muscular over the sweep of pastureland and over the state capitol here in Kansas, and you realize that it's really the only place to be as we finally stagger toward whatever's going to happen on Tuesday. Certainly, there are shiny stories elsewhere but, if Tuesday really is going to be a verdict, one way or the other, not only on Trumpism, but also on all the conservative policy poison that made Trumpism possible—voter suppression, supply-side economics, deregulation, abandonment of the idea of political commonwealth, weaponized splinter Christianity—then Kansas got there on all of those things ahead of the rest of the country, and long before the current president* decided he wasn't a Democrat any more. Michigan, North Dakota, Utah, and Missouri: You're Voting on Legalizing Weed This Tuesday

There are a thousand good reasons to vote in the midterm elections this week. Among those reasons is cannabis, and whether people in four more states should have access to it. Two states, Michigan and North Dakota, are voting on legal weed for everyone of age. If both get the "yes," recreational marijuana would be legal in 11 states, plus D.C. Utah and Missouri are deciding on medical marijuana initiatives. If both states vote in favor, the number of states with medical marijuana laws on the books would rise to 32, plus D.C. And those are just the big ones. Read More

Donald Trump's Words Are a Global Disaster

We've known for decades that trouble at home not only inflicts suffering on those who live within our borders but also enables abuses abroad, undercutting American moral authority and offering pat excuses for world leader eager to justify their own crimes. It's easy to grow numb to our wildly undisciplined president's ever-escalating rhetoric. But even when Donald Trump's threats and ramblings don't rack up a body count at home, they're being used to excuse state crime and prop up dangerous regimes all over the globe.
